Question Serious question in need of an answer.

I have a serious question and I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone can give me. Why do firemen wear red suspenders....and when did they start wearing them? Please only send serious responses. I have searched for years and not been able to find an answer to this question. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Mikey...no one said it wasn't funny

While we're researching the real answer, maybe we can figure out the meaning of life while we're at it.

Question That's a good question, but I don't have the answer...

I guess it may make for some interesting research. Of course, I'd have to be REALLY bored.

I really am curious as to why someone actually wants to know, "Why do firemen wear red suspenders, and when did they start wearing them?"

I wish I knew the answer. Just for the record, rckid41, my suspenders are blue, and I don't use them to hold my pants up. My bunker pants fit just fine. I use them because...well, every one else does and you're supposed to?

    Default Razor's Edge

The simplest answer is usually the correct one. Why red? Why not. We have had both blue and red. Some have scotchlite stripes on them. Frankly I'm glad they are not the same color as my bunkers, I have pulled them up one too many times with the suspenders still between my legs, and if I couldn't see them, I would never remember to set them off to the side before jumping in.
As far as how long, I would say since we started wearing bunker pants. Around here that would be about 1975 or 76, I think. Didn't need them with 3/4 boots. Any body who wore them before that was just trying to keep their drawers up!

I can not think of any other reason but to keep their pants up. Thats why I have them.
There are many colors...red just looks the nicest.

Red is assiociated with the fire dept and the suspenders might be red because of tradition.

They may also be red so you can see FF's easier since some of the gear is all black.

    Dunno, just my thoughts.

My guess is that it was a way to identfy firefighters in the 1700s and became tradition. Look at pictures of fireifighters of the era. Most have red suspenders and some used other identifying colors to show that they were a member of a fire company.

It may be like "Why are barns red?" The farmers answer was because red paint was the cheapest. The hardware store said red was cheap because the farmers bought so much of it.

Either way you sitll need suspenders to hold your pants up.

    Default Red.....

I from my understanding they are Red cause red sticks out better in the day and the night. As the old time Engines are red. A personal felling is they are red to match the color of your truck (well I hope your trucks are red) If anyone has other wise to prove me wrong then please do so.

Default Serious input, maybe not an answer...

Suspenders are favored over belts because wet pants--be they 2002 model fireproof dudes or 1815 leather breeches--are heavy and fall down. Best way to keep 'em up: Suspenders. Why red? Visibility, maybe.
