Firefighter falls two stories while fighting blaze; others injured
(Wilmington-AP) -- A firefighter fell two stories after battling
a blaze at the 23rd Street Market in Wilmington.
Lieutenant George Merrill was among 42 firefighters called to
the 8 a-m fire on North Pine Street. He apparently became
disoriented and exited the building the wrong way.
He thought he was leaving the building through a rooftop window
with a back porch. Instead, he exited a second floor window on a
different side of the building where he fell to a concrete walkway.
Merrill is being treated at Christiana Hospital for several
broken ribs and a punctured lung. He is in stable condition.
Two other firefighters -- James Tearl and Hiram Whatley --
suffered burns to their face. Both were treated and released at the
Wilmington Hospital. No other injuries were reported.
