Interagency Fire Apprenticeship Training Program
FYI-Tuesday, June 25th
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Secretary of the
Interior Gale R. Norton and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann M.
Veneman will announce the first ever National Apprenticeship
Standards for the National Interagency Joint Apprenticeship Program
for Wildland Fire. The apprenticeship program also addresses the
training and safety issues surrounding the deaths of the four
firefighters on Thirtymile Fire and workforce issues identified in
the 1999 GAO report on Work Force Development and Fire Management.
A Job Corps student firefighter, as well as firefighters from
Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service, will join
The National Interagency Joint Apprenticeship Program is a new
interagency fire academy apprenticeship program that was
established to provide a pool of trained firefighters and fire
managers vital to the implementation of the National Fire Plan. The
apprenticeship program assures professional development and quality
