At a fire yesterday, two guys from the city dept. were burned in what they said was a smoke explosion. I once read a very good definition of a Smoke EXPLOSION in FIRE ENGINEERING magazine but for the life of me I cant remember it. I'm aware that a Smoke Explosion is similar to a Backdraft but where do the destinct differences come in?. Are the warning signs any different? Any educated input here would be welcome.

Thanks, this website was exactly what I was looking for. After reading the articles I believe that they didn't experience a smoke explosion but rather a Forward Induced Explosion.
