On July 6, 1944 during a matinee performance of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey circus in Hartford, Connecticut the "big top" caught fire. The canvas tent had been waterproofed with a mixture of naptha and gasoline and burned extremely quickly. Over 165 people, mostly women and children, perished due to the heat and ensuing stampede as anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 people tried to get out of the tent. The cause of the fire was never determined. The "Greatest Show on Earth" has never performed in a tent since. I thought we should all take a minute to remember this event.
