Lack of hydrants slows firefighters
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Lack of hydrants hindered firefighters on
Friday as flames covered a section of landfill the size of a
football field, Battalion Chief Kevin O'Connor said.
The fire started shortly before 6 p.m. and burned about three
hours in the Central Ohio Contractors Inc. landfill for
construction debris on the city's southwest side, he said.
Crews from several departments shuttled water from the road
until firefighters could rig hoses to draw water from a pond about
800 feet away, O'Connor said.
The contracting company also brought in bulldozers and other
heavy equipment to get at pockets of flame that had traveled
beneath the surface, he said.
