I got a phone call from the on duty Ladder 1 crew at Station 3 around 11ish, saying that I had a "visitor from Ohio" who was there asking about me. I said that I would be there in ten....
I called right back and asked if per chance this "visitor" had a Chocolate Lab with him....
"Affirmative!"
It was none other than our very own Steamer and his arson K9, Winchester!
They were on their way back to Ohio after recertifing themselves in Maine for K9 arson detection and since he was "in the area" he took a chance and stopped in!
I took him to the Massachusetts Fire Academy and with a Brother Jake and close friend Paul Zompetti gave Steamer the 50 cent tour. We also stopped by the offices of the State Police Arson and Bomb Squad K9 units (they are also at the Academy.)
After that, we went to the Casa de Gonzo and enjoyed a couple of cold Guinness' and "talked shop" for a while. Winchester got to meet and play with my two "boys" (Bernie and Murphdog.)
He's one his way back to Chillicothe...Have a safe trip, Bro!

I am humbled!
Do you have any idea just how hot it gets in a car? The dog took the keys too, so I didn't have any A/C. And no water either!!Originally posted by Mikeylikesit:

Wow! Back in good ol' Chillicothe after 4 days in the Great State of Maine. Three days in recert, and one day looking at real estate. I figured I love the area, and I gotta plan for retirement, so this was an opportunity for some personal business, too.
I drive in lieu of fly to Maine because I simply enjoy the drive. The New England area offers some of the most gorgeous landscapes in the world, and I get to talk to a lot of interesting people along the way.
Thanks to the Good Captain for the hospitality he extended to us. The Massachusetts Fire Academy is definitely world class with several ideas that I'm gonna try to use down here. I do believe that the Guinness was probably the best I've had in a long, long time. Four days without one, and I was getting a little forlorn.
It's probably what actually got me back.
I had intended on contacting several of our Brothers in the New England area for a possible get together of sorts, but alas, time didn't cooperate. I'll be heading back about the same time next year, so maybe something can be arranged.
Again, Captain Gonzo, Winchester and I thank you for taking time from your schedule to do what you did. It was truly appreciated. If you are ever in my area, you have a standing invitation, my Brother. Just let me know!Last edited by Steamer; 08-02-2002 at 07:14 PM.

Face to Face meetings should always be encouraged at all times.
Therefore, I would like to remind EVERYONE that should you find yourselves traveling to the Victoria Area on Vancouver Island, in Beautiful British Columbia, Canada, you are more then welcomed to call up either myself, or two-7. We may be a small out of the way department, but we can hold our own, and the drinks always flow freely for our brothers and sisters, where ever they hail from."No one ever called the Fire Department for doing something smart..."
