Default Feedback Requested: Improving Site Speed & the Future of Firehouse.com

Over the coming days, Firehouse.com will be implementing a new, considerably improved, banner and sponsorship delivery system. This new system should drastically improve the speed at which the banners and thus all pages as a whole load.

So far, we've implemented these changes on most of the top banners on the site and on the home page.

We'd like your feedback if you've noticed that the front page (specifically) seems to load noticeably quicker than it has in the past.

    Please post your replies here.

Obviously, the banners and sponsors support this site and allow us to grow, and we hope this new system improves their delivery as to not detract from the overall site loading times and get you the content you want as quickly as possible.

In the coming months, we'll also be switching to a new platform for news and content delivery that will also integrate exciting new features and tie the entire site together especially from a content and community perspective.

All of this new technology that will run the new advertising system, the new content management system and the MembersZone platform and all its services represents the first major significant investment in infrastructure since Firehouse.com launched four years ago.

This investment is a testament to our users and their dedication to the site in making it the #1 emergency services portal online.

We hope you will continue to enjoy all of what Firehouse.com has to offer and some exciting new things to come. The growth of the site on all sides will be noticeable.

Thanks to the nearly 2,000 of you who have signed up for the MembersZone before launch. Its taken awhile to get it exactly the way we want it, and those improvements will benefit EVERY aspect of the site -- free and paid.

If you haven't previewed some of the new things coming, including the 'Firehouse Network' which will offer exciting new content and services for all visitors, not just subscribers, visit http://www.firehouse.com/members/ today!

And, as the MembersZone subscriber base grows, never feel that the FREE content will go away. In fact, the opposite is true. As site traffic grows, and the subscriber base, we'll only expand the content and offerings for ALL users. Your continued support of this site, its projects, and sponors will continue to allow us to be the site you want to come to and get the information and resources you need!

    Thanks for your continued support

Couldn’t really tell, I am on a cable modem and when that slows down I bounce to a server out of NC using a satellite.

Yes it has improved, Coding is a lot tidier, mind if I borrow the code for the top banners, that is smooth.

Whilst I appreciate the importance of banners and sponsorship for a free site, please tell me that my long awaited members zone is going to be free of pop ups and banners and all the other things that slow things down????

Yes the home page does appear to be quicker to load, though!

    Thumbs up

The home page and forums load extremely fast now. There were many times in the past...when the ads took forever to load.

    Thanks for your continued concern!

    Yes...I have noticed some improvement.

Spell check would be nice but it would have to be available as an alternative. If it was automatic, then we would not be able to use our unique punctuation and phrases.

WEBTEAM....what is the status of those of us that applied and submitted information for consideration as correspondants or contributors?

Will the forums still stay as is? Will there be seperated forums for use in members zone only?

Sorry folks but spell check probably will never be an option here. It has a very intensive server load given the number of users on the forums and the software makers of the platform recently ended their relationship with an online spell checking service.

captstanm1, you can e-mail brian@firehouse.com related to contributors and there will be members only forums as well as the current free forums.

    Thanks

You've done a wonderful job...things seem to load much more quickly.

Sometimes when I'm typing a thread I need to make alterations. When I go back in my message, my typing acts like a delete key...rather than bumping the rest of the message along. It doesn't happen all the time...am I doing something wrong?

    Webteam,
The homepage does seem to load quickly. However, the forums seem to have slowed significanly over the past several days. I've encountered delays of 3-4 minutes trying to reach the forum home page and routinely experience 10-30 second delays moving to a new thread.

I even had my browser time out once today. I don't believe it is network or browser related. I'm using a DSL connection and other sites are responding briskly.
    Thanks.
