    Default Pierce Paint problems

My department has three Pierce engines that were delivered in 1997 and all three have multiple area of oxidation under the paint that is spreading like poison ivy. Our other Pierce that was delivered in 1996 doensn't have any paint problems.

Has anyone heard of other deparmtents having problems with paint jobs that came out of Pierce around 1997? If so did Pierce of the paint manufacturer (sikkens in our case)do anything about it? Pierce won't warranty the paint, they say its been too long and the local shop wants about $18,000 per unit to repaint them.

You do not have a location listed, so it's hard to say what is causing the problem. If you are in the "snowbelt" area, and the body of the rig is made of steel, it could be corrosion from an accumulation of salt and sand used to deice the roads trapped in the spaces of the apparatus body. The same situation can occur in beach areas due to the salt air. Drain hoiles could be plugged up, which allows water to accumulate and causing corrosion.

Aluminum bodies and stainless steel will have a corrosion reaction common to dissimilar metals if the seals between the two are compromised...ie, aluminum body, stainless steel door handles and vice versa.

If the body is steel and paintwork got a nick in it that went below the primer level of the paint, it could cause a corrosion problem.

Captain G...the profile states this party hails from the White Lake Twp FD, MI.

I am unaware of any local problems with Pierce apparatus paint. Of course..the last few winters in NJ have not seen the application of road salts in abundance.

Placement of this query in these forums is a good starting point....and hopefully, you'll get replies that could indicate a pattern. Good Luck!

My Dept is in Michigan as well, we have had 7 Pierces, but no 97 models. No paint problems. I have not heard of any other local depts having a problem either. Winters have been pretty mild last few years, so not much salt on the roads. Were the rigs all at a fire where there could have been hazmat involved?

    Default Pierce Paint problems

Sterling Heights, Michigan had some paint problems with their newest Pierces. Contact Kevin Conlan conlank@comcast.net or Pat O'Lear pole@comcast.net for specifics.
I thought Pierce had a 7 Year warranty on paint?? Is there some special circumstance that negates the warranty?

Thanks for the info on Sterling Heights. I've forwarded the info to our apparatus supervisor for follow-up.

All three trucks have aluminum bodies, Sikkens paint. No exposure to haz mat other than the usual smoke and by products of fire. The only common link between the trucks is the relatively close time of production (within 6 months).

We began to notice similiar problems with a tanker built by Marion Body Works that we received in the winter of 2000. This truck has Dupont paint and they have already contacted us and are going to repaint the entire unit due to a fault somewhere in the paint application process.

We have a 2001 Dash that has been sent back for blistering under the paint, running lights rusting out, and under carrage rusting, our 1978 Pierce has less rustt then our 2001 does.

Not sure about the 7 yr warranty, but even so, 1997 was 9 years ago.

    Default 1996 Quantum

Same here on a 1996 Pierce Quantum around the edge of the wheel well. Good friend that owns a very large auto body business in the area look at it and said that it was due to the fact the when the product was cut it was done to hot and not re-treated after the fact.

Our 1996 Lance has a lot more rust then our 1992 Lance. In my opinion, Pierce quality has diminished at all levels since they got big.

What year did Oshkosh buy Pierce? I have to agree, I think Pierce quality has went downhill over the years. For the most part I have only dealt with
Pierce rigs over the past 17 years. The 1996 105' Lance cab straight stick my old dept has has been out of service just about as much as it has been in service. If its not the brakes, then it this or that. What a headache! On the other hand, the 1981 Pierce Arrow was 1 kick *** engine with little or no problems. It was finally placed into reserve a few years ago.

    Just my 2 cents!!!
