NY Fire Chief announces retirement
NEW YORK (AP) - Fire Department Chief Daniel Nigro, who was
sworn into the position after his predecessor died in the World
Trade Center attacks, has announced he will retire.
Nigro, 53, was praised for holding the department together after
it lost 343 members on Sept. 11.
He elected to retire after the fire commissioner's office
decided not to grant him tenure as chief, which would have allowed
him to retire with a larger pension.
"I'm retiring, leaving probably Sept. 9," Nigro told Newsday.
"If someone had told me in 1969 that I would spend 33 years here
and become chief of department I would have signed up all over
again."

For sure Chief Nigro will be missed. In his tenure he was a very fair Chief, and equally knowledgeable. I think giving him credit for holding the job together though is a bit much. Anyone in any relationship to the FDNY knows who held the job together until now........Those company Officers, Capt's-Lt's-and yes even the Senior men and women of the individual companies. Even now, they share their shoulders, their grief, their midnight conversations, offering each other hope and solice............"A Tip O' The Helmet" for those who everyday must face the vacancies in their companies-first hand-not through reports. I will miss Nigro, but I will miss my 343 brave souls more so!

Thank you RR. 91101 is everyday in 40/35. Chief Nigro knowledge will be missed. But helping keep the Department together, NO. There was not one Staff Chief or Commissioner that stepped foot in our firehouse. THE MEN HELD THE DEPARTMENT TOGETHER...
