Arson Fires Result in Arrest
Maryland Arson Task Force Activated
A series of arson and attempted arson fires in the Mount Rainier area this morning resulted in the arrest of a juvenile and a task force of Arson Investigators to canvass the community this evening. Just before 2:30 am today units from the Mount Rainier area were dispatched to the 3600 block of Oak Lane for a reported house fire. Units arrived on the scene to find fire in the rear of this single family home. The occupants of this house were able to exit prior to the fire departments arrival. Twenty-six firefighters were on the scene of this fire that took about 20 minutes to knock down, damage estimates have not yet been determined. A 19-year-old male fire fighter, a member of the Cottage City Fire Station 2, was transported to the Washington Hospital Center for treatment of a laceration to his head. While battling this fire, another house fire was seen about 1 block away at about 2:45 am. An assignment of firefighters was dispatched to this house fire in the 3400 block of Newton Street, Mount Rainier. This large 2 story vacant home had fire throughout the structure and had to be fought using exterior hand lines. Thirty firefighters took about 45 minutes to bring this fire under control, this structure was totally destroyed, damage estimates have yet to be determined. As a result of these fires, Prince George’s County Fire Investigators and Mount Rainier City Police Department Officers conducted an extensive search of the immediate areas. While firefighters were still fighting these two fires, additional reports of automobiles fires were being dispatched in the 3300 block of Otis Street and in the 3400 block of Perry Street, these fires were also determined to be arson and attempted arson. As a result of the cooperative and joint efforts in the search of the area by Fire Investigators and the Mount Rainier City Police Department, a 17 year old male of Mount Rainier was detained in the area of the fires. He was questioned, and has been charged with Second Degree Arson. Second Degree Arson is punishable by up to 20 years in jail and a monetary fine. It is not known if this person acted alone or as part of a group. Because he is a juvenile, no additional information about this person will be released at this time. The investigation is still open and on going.
The Maryland Arson Task Force has been activated and will be used to canvass the immediate area of these fires. The Task Force is a unit comprised of arson investigators from Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel Counties as well as agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. The Mount Rainier City Police Department will also assist the Task Force in the canvassing of the community in an effort to obtain additional information about these fires.
