SEATTLE – An off-duty firefighter riding a motorcycle in a funeral procession was struck by a car Friday and died at Harborview Medical Center Friday afternoon.

Mike Coffey was a captain with Eastside Fire and Rescue in Issaquah and a former South King County paramedic.

Mike Coffey always wanted to be a firefighter.
Police say he was 36 years old and the father of two young sons, ages 5 and 2.

The accident happened at 12:23 p.m. on Beacon Avenue South.

“He was attempting to catch up with the other escort vehicles. He had cleared the last intersection and he had gone what appears into the oncoming lane to pass other traffic,” said Lt. Andy Tooke, Seattle Police.

Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg-Hanson says witnesses tried to give him CPR at the scene. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, but he suffered severe head and internal injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:25 p.m.
