Two injured Buffalo firefighters receive pretrial award
(Buffalo-AP) -- Two Buffalo firefighters received more than one
(m) million dollars in a pretrial award during a negligence case.
Their attorneys say the men were seriously hurt in separate
incidents while steering rear tillers on trucks without rear
suspension. Attorneys say both were slammed into the tops of their
A state supreme court judge approved the awards on Friday.
Attorneys say 68-year-old Thomas Higgins received 250-thousand
dollars for his back injuries in 1991. They say 42-year-old Jan
Young received 950-thousand dollars for his serious neck injuries
in a 1992 incident.
Attorneys say the Pennsylvania company that made the trucks --
Simon-Ladder Towers -- took out the rear suspension. They say it
had turned out that the hook and ladder trucks would be too tall to
fit into fire halls.
Buffalo no longer uses those trucks.
