AUSTIN (AP) - State fire marshal's investigators are looking
into the deaths of two volunteer firefighters killed in separate
parts of the state, the agency announced Tuesday.
Capt. Roger Michael Dunn, 48, of the Clute Volunteer Fire
Department died Monday at a house fire in Freeport. Travis Wiens,
28, of the Wichita West Volunteer Fire Department, died Monday at a
grass fire just south of Wichita Falls.
Autopsies are being conducted in both cases.
The state fire marshal's office is working with the departments
in Brazoria and Wichita counties to determine the cause of death
for each man, according to a news release.
Dunn collapsed just minutes after assisting another firefighter
with gear. He was rushed to the Brazosport Memorial Hospital, where
he was pronounced dead. Investigators are awaiting an autopsy
report from the Galveston County medical examiner.
Wiens was riding in a cage on the front bumper of a fire truck.
A pickup truck and the fire truck collided, throwing Wiens to the
ground. He was run over by the fire truck.
Wiens was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken
to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
Dunn had been with the Clute department for about 16 years.
Wiens had been with the Wichita West department for just more than
a month and a half.
State fire marshal's investigators have examined six
line-of-duty deaths of Texas firefighters since September 2001.
