DETROIT (AP) - A 5-year-old girl died and her 4-year-old sister
was critically injured in a fire that trapped them on the second
floor of an apartment building Sunday, officials said.
Tiara McKing was pronounced dead about 11 a.m. in the emergency
room at Children's Hospital of Michigan, spokeswoman Kelly Scheer
said. Her sister, Dasha McKing, was listed in critical condition.
Witnesses told Detroit television stations WDIV and WJBK that
the girls were alone in the apartment. Thick smoke and locked doors
prevented neighbors from reaching the girls before firefighters
were able to remove them from the apartment.
The cause of the fire was under investigation Sunday evening.
