DENVER (AP) - A 59-year-old retired Colorado firefighter
participating in a motorcycle procession honoring the victims of
the Sept. 11 attacks died Thursday in Newark, N.J., after being hit
    by a bus.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of
family, was a volunteer firefighter with the Arvada Fire Protection
    District for about 20 years.
He was traveling with a group of about 200 firefighters from New
York to Washington as part of the Ride to Remember, and was riding
on roadsides and monitoring other riders when he was struck, said
Cindy Matthews, spokeswoman for the West Metro Fire Rescue.
"They have the experienced people on the sides to keep an eye
out for the newer riders," Matthews said.
The Ride to Remember is an annual event commemorating
firefighters who have lost their lives. It was traveling from
Colorado to New York, then to Washington, and Somerset, Penn.,
before returning to Colorado Sept. 18.
    The riders canceled Thursday's events.

    Unhappy More

DENVER (AP) - New Jersey officials were planning a hero's
farewell for a retired Arvada firefighter killed while
participating in a Sept. 11 motorcycle procession.
Ray Feasle, 59, was hit by a hotel shuttle bus Thursday in
Newark, N.J. awhile serving as a road guard for more than 200
firefighters who had ridden to New York in the "Road to
    Remember."
A road guard is the rider who brings up the rear and supervises
    the procession.
Traffic had been stopped so the motorcycles could pass through
an intersection when Feasle, the last biker to cross, was clipped
by the bus. Police were investigating whether the shuttle bus
driver went around the stopped traffic.
The driver, Pierre Calixte, 60, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was issued a
summons for not having his driver's license and other papers.
An autopsy will be conducted because of conflicting information
    from witnesses.
The motorcycle procession of about 200 firefighters was
dedicated to the 347 firefighters who died when the World Trade
    Center towers collapsed.
The group, which included 60 Coloradans, was in New York City's
Sept. 11 memorial service Wednesday and joined a midnight ride to
ground zero. From New York, the group was scheduled to visit
Washington and Somerset, Penn., before returning to Colorado Sept.
    18.
Feasle, a plumber by trade, was a volunteer firefighter with the
Arvada Fire Protection District for about 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and adult children Amanda,
    James and Ray Jr.
