Default Fire Department Uniform Policy ?

I am on a team of Firefighters and Paramedics that is looking into the use of a summer uniform that would consist of short pants and a polo type shirt.

What I am looking for is other departments in the USA that are allowed to wear short pants and to get an idea of your rules and regulations on this topic.

Please contact me here on the forum or at jweissner@comcast.net

    Thanks you,

By us it is the Villa Park FD who are the progressive ones, I'll see if I can find out their rules with the shorts.

I know this topic has been discussed to great detail in another thread, so if you do not get a good response now, try a search. With that said...

Norfolk (Va) Fire-Rescue issues to our members uniform shorts. Very similar in style to what you see USPS wearing. We are also are issued gym shorts and sweat pants for PT. Our uniform policy is fairly liberal - if it is issued, you are allowed to wear it. The only exception is that PT gear (gym shorts and sweat pants) must be covered by bunker pants when going on a call and PT gear cannot be worn for things like inspections, store runs, etc. Otherwise, we are pretty free to wear uniform shorts or any other issued clothing at our discretion. We have guys that wear shorts with sweat shirts when the weather starts getting cool - go figure. Our department is in the process of reviewing all SOP's, so there is a possibility that the guidelines may change. For the most part, the issued clothing looks professional and we don't get to hung-up on it. Sometimes, there are bigger things to worry about.

Our neighboring department, The Woodlands F.D., is issued uniform shorts. I am not sure on the specifics, but I do know, that if one person is wearing shorts then the whole crew has to be wearing them, but it does not mean that the entire shift has to. Each company has the option. Our policy, is wear them if you have them. They are not issued to us, but we can by them ourselves, and it does matter if everyone is wearing them or not. Just my .02 cents worth.
