18-year-old firefighter dies in auto accident
EFFORT, Pa. (AP) - A teenage volunteer firefighter was killed
and another injured when a pickup truck crashed into a telephone
pole around the time an arson began nearby.
Police said they were investigating to see if the events on
Monday were connected.
Firefighters were dispatched to the crash scene at 11:45 a.m.,
just minutes before they were called to a fire about a mile from
the wreck, police said.
Daniel Dreisbach, 18, the passenger in the truck, was killed in
the crash. The driver, Ryan J. Campbell, 18, was injured. Both were
members of the Sun Valley Volunteer Fire Company in Chestnuthill
Township and seniors at Pleasant Valley High School.
"We're all in shock right now," fire company President
Jeannine Gender said. "To lose a young gentleman like that is
Police said Campbell was driving away from the fire scene when
he went off the side of the road, swerved back, crossed both lanes
and hit the pole on the passenger side.
Dreisbach was pronounced dead at the scene. Campbell was flown
by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Salisbury Township,
for surgery. He was in guarded condition Tuesday, hospital
officials said.
The fire, which destroyed half an unoccupied trailer home, was
an arson, police said.
"The state police are investigating any possible connection
with the fire and the traffic accident due to Dreisbach and
Campbell being members of the Sun Valley Volunteer Fire Company,"
police said in a news release.
