LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa. (AP) - One man was seriously burned and at
least 50 were decontaminated after a small chemical explosion at a
Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical research lab, a fire official said.
Wissahickon Fire Chief Anthony Minio said a chemical process
under way in the lab went wrong. He said there was smoke damage and
water damage in the building.
Four to six employees were exposed to the chemical, as were
three Lower Gwynedd police officers who were the first to respond
and between 40 and 50 firefighters. Minio said no chemicals were
released into the outside air.
Minio said the burned man was working near the chemical process
in the lab and sustained third-degree burns to his chest and face.
The man was taken to Temple University Hospital's burn unit. His
name was not immediately available.
The others exposed to the chemical were decontaminated at the
