BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) - Fire blazed through a row of stores early
Thursday, destroying three businesses and the apartments above
them, authorities said.
Police Officer Nelson Lopez responded at 3 a.m. to an alarm at
Shore Drugs on East Main Street.
Lopez saw flames, called the fire department, then kicked in a
door, banging on apartment doors to awaken residents. He led eight
people through the smoke to safety, said Officer Sonny DiStefano, a
Suffolk County police spokesman.
Lopez and resident Sheila Santiago, 21, were treated for smoke
inhalation, police said.
Authorities said the drug store, a nightclub and a bridal store
were destroyed.
