Hiring, no - testing, yes
The city has a hiring freeze in place, but it will not stop giving civil service exams for police, firefighter and other government jobs.
"A hiring freeze doesn't change the civil service process," said Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Martha Hirst. "We will continue to test. We must be sure we have a pool of qualified candidates to fill positions when needed."
More than 18,000 hopefuls submitted applications before Thursday's filing deadline for the Dec. 14 firefighter exam.
The NYPD, which gave an exam last week, will start a new round of recruiting this week for a test to be offered in February.
Cops and firefighters are retiring at a record pace, and the city will almost certainly have to replace the people the NYPD and FDNY lose just to keep their mandated head counts, officials said.
More than 3,000 cops and nearly 1,000 firefighters have retired this year. That trend is expected to continue.ALL GAVE SOME BUT SOME GAVE ALL
