ELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) - An 83-year-old retired Episcopal priest died
after a fire swept through his apartment, police said.
City Housing Authority officials identified the victim as the
Rev. Arthur Frieman, who lived alone in a sixth-floor apartment.
Residents on the fifth floor and higher were evacuated after the
blaze Monday and firefighters used large fans to ventilate the
building after the fire was put out, said Housing Authority
Chairman James Mirando.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Three residents were taken to Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Two
were treated and released and the third was admitted with breathing
problems, Housing Authority officials said. Their names were not
released.
Frieman, who was ordained as a deacon in 1974 and as a priest
two years later, retired from the priesthood in 1990, but
volunteered at Grace Episcopal Church in Elmira as an honorary
priest associate.
"The young people in the parish really adored him," the Rev.
Donald Matthews said. "He was a classic gentleman and very much a
part of his generation."
