Thumbs down Third Watch...beginning to suck...

I don't know how many of you guys watch "Third Watch" but I am growing tired of the poor representation of firefighters and the job they do. I know it's "just a TV show" but some of the things they show on this show are ridiculous. We were watching it here at the station the other night when the cast responded to a multi-story structure fire with people trapped inside. Well into the event, several patients were found lying about on the floor, overcome by smoke. The firefighters working inside start yelling out the window for the EMS guys. Well, here they go; stampeding into the still smoking structure. When they get to the patients, a medic checks one for breathing and a pulse, shakes his head and leaves the patient. The other screams "We got a live one!" or something. All this while the firefighters are casually going about overhaul like the patients didn't even exist. I mean, come on! Which one of us is going let several victims of smoke inhalation just lie there on the floor while we start overhaul??? What firefighter wouldn't have already dragged the victims to a much better environment outside? Who of us would not start life-saving care, regardless of the absence of a pulse or breathing??? It seems to me that this TV show spends waaaay too much time over-dramatizing the jobs of cops and EMS personnel, when they ought to spend a few minutes actually learning how firefighters do their jobs. This is not the first time I've noticed outrageous actions potrayed by firefighters on this show. I hate to think how many citizens out there actually think that's how we operate. We have a hard enough time overcoming negative stigmas as it is.

Well I watch the show whenever I can. I agree with you that they could make the show a little better and represent the services better. But like has been stated it is only a TV show. I believe the particular incident you are referring to came on Monday night. The one where there was a bomb planted in a building. Well if it is the same one then I believe the people that went in checking pulses were actually the people from the morgue checking for survivors. Still you wouldnt send them into a building where the fire wasnt totally extinguished. Correct me if I am wrong but that is what came to mind. But I agree with you 100% that maybe if they put more time into this show then it would be a lot better.

It's because you know more about the fire service. Likewise, me being a mechanic, every time I see someone on TV rip a few wires out from under the dash and hotwire the car... makes my head spin. There could be a little more realism, and a little less over-acting, and it would still be a great show.

Well if you wanted to show a real fire on tv,there would be a black screen with scba sounds in the backround- not good tv,so yes there has to be some dramatic liscense.
A show about the other 95 percent time firefighters spend waiting around wouldnt be that interesting.
But I agree some of its kinda stupid and hokie.
If I want a good tv show, I will watch Third Watch,Simpsons,Mail Call,Modern Marvels,Emeril Live. If I want a good firefighting show I will go in the closet and get a American Heat video.

"Well if it is the same one then I believe the people that went in checking pulses were actually the people from the morgue checking for survivors"

Nope..these were the regular EMS guys...waiting outside with their ambulance. No morgue people in this episode. My wife says I bitch too much (she's a firefighter, too) and that I pick every movie apart like a greasy piece of fried chicken. But, is it too much to ask for the Hollywood guys to at least get it kind of close? And the over all attitude of the characters portrayed in the show are nothing close to anybody I've ever met in the service, big city or small town. Most people I know in any public service career are eager to go to work. I know we all face "burn out" and depression in our jobs. But this show portrays all of us as some kind of bomb waiting to explode. Just watching the program stresses me out more than my job. Too much drama for me. My wife loves it, though. Go figure.

I didn't know the firefighters were still part of the show since Day 1 of this season all the episodes have been based on either, Bosco, Yokis, Sully or Davis there doing it again where they focus on the police and not on the fire department
A good firefighting show The Bravest That is a good firefighting show that is unscirpted and unrehearsed

By the way, the portrayal of USAR operations on "Crossing Jordan" was totally botched as well, but the vast majority of the people wouldn't know that or care one way or the other. You have to remember that these programs are trying to tell a good dramatic story that the majority of the people will watch. I would suspect that we don't make a blip in their demographic radar. These shows aren't documantaries. They're entertainment and they have to be popular to make money and bring in advertising dollars. I don't appreciate it when they get things totally wrong, but you have to accept the show for what it is, or you can simply not watch it.

No doubt. I grew up on Emergency! and loved every minute of it. At least their producers made an effort to make things as realistic as possible. I hear Mantooth is some kind of producer now. Maybe he could come up with a genuine show about fire/rescue that is believable and entertaining at the same time. I am SICK to death of cop shows. As silly as Backdraft was portraying firefighters, at least it had a "whodunnit" plot that pertained to the fire service.

Actually he was developing a show called USAR-1 based on the LA County Urban Search and Rescue Team. Haven't heard anything about it for awhile so maybe he couldn't get the networks to buy it.

And yes Third Watch is getting really bad. It was never very realistic but at least it used to be slightly entertaining. Now it's almost depressing.

The answer of course depends on your perception and value in
"entertainment".

As mentioned the realism has to be "enhanced" since the majority of what Fitefighters, Paramedics and Police Officers do is routine.

However as a T.V. show that helps pass the hours of a night shift, it does have some value. Sure we want to see all action, and some episods are more lame, but it is T.V.

Now on the 2 hour special, Taylor was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured. So what has happened to her?. Shouldn't they show that story line? She can ride on my rig anytime

Was that one a two hour special too?
I know the one with Sully's fire was. I taped it, and while I was watching one of the ones on A&E, they advertised for it, and had it as a two hour special. But, since I only taped for an hour, I only got to watch the first half.
Anyway! I didn't realize the one in which Alex got hit was a two parter also.

Because they probably realized that after the third building collapse of the month it would get pretty boring.

Default Starting to Suck?

I saw the first episode of this unbelievable waste of time and swore I'd never watch again. Then I felt guilty about judging it from just one show, so I watched another. Guess what? First impression was right on the money.
I've never seen such a bunch of whiney ***, sour puss, civil servants in my life. There no is representation of the brotherhood, camraderie, community, loyalty or dedication that I have witnessed all over this country and been a part of in the FD where I happily go to do my best for the people of my community. The show is an insult to the men and women of the NYPD, FDNY, and FDNY EMS.

Two was enough. Emergency! was far from the truth, but one thousand miles closer than Third Watch will ever be.

Unfortunately, Emergency! is not on right now. It was on TVLand until about 6 months ago, but no longer...
