Firecadetak, I notice you are with the University Department in Fairbanks. I lived in Kodiak back in the 1990's and had Mr.Phil Rounds come down and teach us a confined space class. I believe he was some kind of Fire Chief up there. Is he still around?

raven911,
Yep, I am with the University Fire Department, Phil Rounds is shift battalion chief, real great guy to work with. He is still very active in teaching classes, such as tactics and strategy, extrication, and so on.

I used to live in AK, Eagle River. I remember when I was a kid the Fire dept let me use the red line to help put out a brush fire.
That thought puts a smile on face today. I really wish I could thank that crew.

Greetings from Soldotna and Central Emergency Services. I'm the Fire-EMS Photographer/webmaster for the department, also just starting out as an E.T.T. Check us out sometime at www.cesfire.org. Stay safe out there!

Used to be a resident with the North Star Volunteer Fire Department outside of North Pole. Miss you guys. Alaskan firefighters are really a special breed. Stay safe this Christmas.

Any AK Volunteers?
I am curious, are any of you alaskans volunteers?
Are there many volunteer departments up there?
Are they (Or you) busy volunteer departments?
Do any of the volunteer departments take on visitors/observers for a day (FF-2)
How do y'all handle the winters up there?
Is caring for victims a major issue in winter?
Are the majority of MVA's caused by tourists?
I'm planning a month-long trip in 2008 and one of the things I'd like to do is hang out and see how a average volunteer fire department functions during the average day.
