SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A van carrying 14 people slammed into a semitrailer truck near Kanab Wednesday morning. Four people were dead and others were injured, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
Highway Patrol Sgt.Doug McCleve said adults and children were on the van, which ran into the semi around 5 a.m.
"At this point we believe at least some of them are illegal immigrants," McCleve said about those in the van. Officials have called the Immigration and Naturalization Service to help with interpretation and to determine they are from.
The collision occurred on Highway 89 eight miles east of Kanab.
The van ran into one of the truck axles. The truck driver wasn't hurt, McCleve said.
By the time troopers arrived at the scene, several citizens had taken some of the injured people to Kane County Hospital. All 10 of the survivors, ages ranging from 2 to 37, were accepted at the hospital, said spokeswoman Laurali Noteman.
Three of those injured critically were airlifted to trauma centers in Las Vegas and Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George.
Two others were taken by ambulance to the St. George hospital, Noteman said.
Kanab is 260 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Arizona border.
