Springdale, Arkansas Firefighters Battle Apt Fire

On Monday, December 02, 2002, at about 2020 hours, Springdale, Arkansas firefighters (Level 1 Assignment - 2 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 rescue, 1 medic squad and Battalion 1) were dispatched to a report of heavy smoke coming from an apartment at 23-D Applegate, in the downtown section of Springdale. First unit on scene, Fire Chief David Hinds, reported a one story 4-plex with heavy smoke showing from the attic. The second unit on scene, Battalion Chief Duane Atha, assume command of the incident and set up Applegate Command. While firefighters were using aggressive suppression tactics, it was discovered that the apartments shared a common attic. IC called for a second alarm (extra engine and squad) to assist with manpower.

The American Red Cross was requested to assist with placement of 4 families.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SFD Fire Prevention Bureau.

Units responded were: Car 1, Car 3, Car 4, Car 8 (Fire Marshal), Car 9 (Investigator), Batt1, Truck 1, Engines 2 -3 - 5, Rescue 1, Squads 1 & 5. Outside agencies: Springdale Police and American Red Cross
