Blaze strikes Midtown church; cause unknown

ST. PETERSBURG -- A fire caused about $5,000 worth of damage to the New Congregational Church of God, 2101 Ninth Ave. S, Thursday night.
The cause of the fire had not been determined, but it may be electrical problems or a lightning strike, deputy fire marshal Richard Feinberg said. The fire department got the call at 10:41 p.m., about an hour after the congregation had left after attending a weeknight service.
Most of the damage occurred in a storage area used for extra pews and other items, Feinberg said. It was unclear whether or not the congregation would be able to use the church for services this morning.
