A 22-year-old volunteer firefighter died early yesterday in a one-car crash.

Brian Patrick Hansen, a volunteer with Stony Point's Wayne Hose Fire Company since 1998, was killed when his 1988 Jeep Wrangler ran off a winding, rain-slick road and struck a tree about 12:49 a.m., police said.

No passengers were in Hansen's car, said Stony Point Police Sgt. Chris Smith.

The accident occurred on Wayne Avenue, east of Crickettown Road, Smith said. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The Wayne Hose Fire Company was called to the scene to extricate Hansen from the vehicle. The Stony Point Ambulance Corps, Rockland Paramedic Services, and investigators from the Rockland County Sheriff's Department also responded. Hansen was taken to Nyack Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Stony Point Fire Chief Paul Rooney said Hansen, an Eagle Scout, was a good firefighter. After Hansen joined the department, his two younger brothers also joined, Rooney said.

"They're very community-oriented a good family, good kids," the fire chief said.

Hansen, whose family lives in Tomkins Cove, was a 1998 graduate of North Rockland High School. He graduated from Rockland Community College with an associate's degree in criminal justice. For the past three years, he worked as a department manager at Wal-Mart in Monroe.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and served as commander of the junior color guard of Unit 67, Sons of the VFW, Post 8997.

He is survived by his parents, Henry and Barbara Hansen of Tomkins Cove; sisters Laurie Fisher of Vermont, Kathleen Hansen of Monroe and Jennifer Hansen of Tomkins Cove; brothers Keith Hansen and Thomas Hansen of Tomkins Cove; grandmothers Betty Hansen of Tomkins Cove and Elizabeth O'Hara of Suffern; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Hansen family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Tuesday at the Higgins Funeral Home, 73 N. Liberty Drive (Route 9W) in Stony Point.

A Fire Department prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church on John Street in Stony Point. Burial will follow at Mount Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw.
