Truck drives through crossing gate and into train; none hurt

Associated Press, December 17, 2002 - 02:13 AM

An 87-year-old man drove through a railroad crossing gate and into the path of a moving Amtrak train, but neither he nor any passenger was injured, police said.

Howard Vanmaaren was ticketed for passing a railroad gate and his truck was heavily damaged in the Monday afternoon incident, police said.

The train was moving north from Orlando to the Winter Park station. The train's trip originated in Miami on Monday morning, and was scheduled to end in New York late Tuesday morning.

The train, which police said sustained minor damage, continued its trip after about a 90-minute delay.

Winter Park is five miles northeast of Orlando.
