Default Only 5% of us are normal

While listening to a radio commercial in the car, I heard something that went like this:

    Do you find yourself:
    1. Waking up in the middle of the night?
    2. Not getting enough sleep?
    3. Eating too much or too little?
    4. Worrying about the day ahead?
    5. Have feelings youíre in danger?
    6. Questioning your decisions?
    7. Concerned about your familyís future?
    8. Putting yourself in harms way?
If you answered yes to three or more of these questions you may be suffering from severe stress and/or anxiety.......

It struck me that 95% of the people answering yes were stressed out messes and the other 5% were just normal firefighters.

If you go by "Majority Rules", then I guess that would make the 5% of normal people... not so normal.

    I'm definately way too stressed.

I'm not normal, but I admit it!

I'm with you Gonzo I admit to not being normal. Are we supposed to be normal? After all we are running in to life threatening situations on a dialy basis without hesitation.

Me... well I'm um... just... Me! Actually now that I think about it, I am a bit different... okay I'll admit it... I'm a raving lunatic! But around the station I appear normal because we are all crazy - a group of us at our station is like the Bar scene just after the beginning of the original Star Wars movie - a bunch of weirdos having a good time

    Cool

well I have to say, that the civilians might think that we are crazy, but just think about it, when you responded to calls what is the most common place you responed to? Now, whos crazy. I think we are as normal as can be in our own way. We love our job. And yes sometimes we over do it, but thats NORMAL for us.

Getting all excited and talking about "smoke showing" when your driving down the road and see smoke somewhere, no....not normal.

Hearing sirens and looking where they are coming from so you can "see what the other guys have got", no......not normal.

Walking in the mall(or anywhere) seeing a Fire Department jacket from someplace else and starting a conversation with that person just to say hi, no.......not normal.

Going to your neighbors fire to take pictures, no.....not normal.

Running into a burning building, and high fiving about it back at the station, no.....not normal.

I think if you are "normal" you wouldn't be doing this kind of work.
Where did it all go so beautifully wrong???

    Default Really!

The above symptoms are signs of depression, anxiety and stress. Pretty normal in our profession working busy shifts, OT, trades, demanding family life, mandatory schedules and yea come on that of duty job.

More departments though are including a psych test as part of the hiring process.

This psychological test is changing the fire service. Sure there are some folks who have a lot of baggage and shouldnít be hired. But most of the red-hotís, the back bone of the fire service, canít make it through the process. Surprisingly, the evaluations are based on the performance of those already in the fire service. Not anyone I know. Go figure.

More and more agencies are using the psychological test in their hiring process. Psychologists are competing for this lucrative business and agencies feel they need the service to hire the right candidates. In one large department forty-percent of candidates were eliminated from the hiring process through the psychological tests.

Fire administrations feel theirs hands are tied and get frustrated when they see a high percentage of their superior candidates that were eliminated by their physiological test being hired by other agencies.

You can learn more how to prepare for the psych test, entry level hiring, promotionals and my book Eat Stress for Breakast:
