I have been using a scanner for almost three years now in my truck and at home because I find it is more reliable than my pager. Anyone else use them? What type and why. How do you like it?

i have an old radio shack 50 channel scanner that i sometimes listen to at home. mostly i listen to the neighboring fire depts and the local ambulance service. it comes in handy when others are short handed or if dispatch forgets to tone us for a call.

I have a radioshack scanner. It has 200 channels and thats more than I can find frequencies for that I can pick up. oh well I guess I'm prepared. What gets me now is that all these departments are going 800 trunking and the scanner I have can only do one of those at a time.

I'm just the opposite. We have 2 scanners, a scanning 800, and 2 other radios in our alarm room. I turn the scanners off and leave the 800 off scan. Someone calling for backup is all that we need to listen for on the radio. All alerts come over the crash phone from the tower. I learned to love radio silence when I was on motors in Traffic. (meaning that my headset was usually unplugged)

I have a BC350A....good little scanner...well constructed and recieves well...wish it had something along the lines of a priority feature though....and it can be a pain if you need to program in a new frequency fast....still a good little scanner....i do not use an external speaker with it

I hope to put an external speaker on mine for better sound quality but am not sure if the 20 watt cobra or uniden will be good. Any body have another idea.

Yup ! !
If Radio Shack built it, chances are that I have had at least 1. I currently own 12 scanners, (4 trunking) and most of them are always on. For instance, My official car (Ford Crown Vic) has a RS 2032 100ch trunk tracker (up thru 800mhz range) I monitor our local PD channel, adjacent county dispatch, fireground channels for our county, among other things. A scanner is another tool to help get the job done safely, as far as we are concerned. Remote speakers?? go with the radio manufacturer's recommendations. stay Safe....

Radio Shack Pro95
I just bought a new Radio Shack Pro95 which was on sale $149.95. Recently moving here from rural Kansas, I needed something capable of the trunking function. I'm still working out figuring all the techno-wizardry (insert expletives here!) I previously used a Radio Shack Pro71 which is a 100 channel w/o trunking or 800M. If anyone out there needs a basic 100 channel scanner-message me, as this thing will spend the rest of its life in my drawer, it's really a great handheld. Anyway, it's nice to be able to hear what I'm missing when off duty should the "big one" hit, I don't consider myself a "scanner junkie" but rather someone who really hates scary surprises. Merry Christmas to you all...

Scanners
I have been using a scanner since I was a senior in high school. My first was a regency 10 channel, crystal controlled unit. I have since always bought bearcat scanners. Have had them in both my official and personal cars, home, etc. Last year I bought a new scanner wanting to get into the trunk tracking and purchased a Radio Shack Pro-2067 mobile. I am not really satisfied with this unit. I dont think it has the sensitivity of the bearcat units I am used to. I have previously had no problem receiving transmissions from certain areas. Now, I almost have to be on top of them to receive calls. I will be getting a new bearcat when the fundage becomes available. I run my mobile with an antenna specialist antenna that I have always used and is top on the market. Anyone else have proplems with the Radio Shack unit. If anyone thinks their great ? Make me an offer I'll sell you one.
Take care and keep safe...happy holidays...Safety - It's the most important decision you will make today.

Re: Scanners
I also have one of these and I agree, it's reception is terrible. The trunk tracking and p/l decode are the features I wanted but with it's poor reception it really doesn't work very well.Originally posted by ffmedicmo

Anybody know if Uniden or somebody else makes a scanner with these two features that works well?
I also have a Radio Shack Pro-2053 that works very well but does not have p/l decode.FTM-PTB-DTRT

Check out the uniden web site and I think they do have one that will meat your neads. I have had my first bearcat for over a year and love it compared to my radio shack. Can't wait for my BCT7 to arrive. Can't afford or need the higher end models.

Since I have my amatuer radio license, my amatuer HT serves as my sacnner as well. It is a Yeasu VX-5R, it can transmit 5 watts on VHF low, VHF high, and UHF on the amatuer frequencies and recives from 1-999 mhz. With 220 memory channels, alphanumeric tags, PL decode and squelch, and just about every other option it is an amazing little rig.
The only thing it doesn't do is follow trunked systems, but since everyone around here is smart enough to stay away from them I could care less about that.
Plus, it is just about the size of a pack of cigarettes, and that is with the battery attached!
