(Raleigh, North Carolina-AP) -- A North Carolina fund to assist
the families of fallen firefighters in the September 11th attack
has been closed as the final payment goes to New York.
The Fallen F-D-N-Y Fund collected nearly half-a-(M)million
dollars in the 15 months following the terrorist attack.
The nonprofit fund was organized by the state fire marshal's
Office and the North Carolina State Firemen's Association.
Firefighters held a statewide "fill the boot" campaign in
which patrons were urged to place donations in boots of
firefighters set up at restaurants. There also was an advertising
campaign.
Fund donations paid for four vans sent to the Fire Family
Transport Foundation, which provides transportation to New York
fire department family members for memorial services and other
events.
The remaining funds were given to the nonprofit Thomas Elsasser
Fund, which offers financial assistance to fire department families
in need.
