My Grandfather was a scuba diver and was with the Civil Defense in IL. From his scrape book and being at his house when he was called, I remember him going to several different calls. The ones that have really stuck in my mind are; Chester IL, dive to look for a car that went into the Mississippi, car was full of children coming back from swiming pool, breaks went out. 4/5 yr. old girl fell between ramps going up the the U.S.S. Admiral(spelling???). Then there where numerous drownings in Lakes and having to search for guns and stolen things thrown off brideges in St.Louis MO.
My question, I know this was about 30 years ago. Is there still a Water REscue Team with Civil Defense in IL, or has the FD through the years taken over that roll?

Wood Dale ESDA had a dive team for many years but I don't think they are still around. Sorry that's all the info I have.

Contact Chief Atchison . . .
Rebecca,
I believe that fire departments have taken over the role of the earlier civil defense dive team. I would recommend that you direct your question to the Chester Fire Department.
You can reach Chief Milton Atchison at:
Chester Fire Department
1330 Swanwick Street
Chester, IL 62233
618-826-2326
You might also contact the Illinios Fire Chiefs Association at 800-662-0732. Jerry Burke is the Executive Director.
Good luck!
