Springs fire routs three families

A fire at a two-story Coral Springs apartment complex displaced three families Tuesday night, destroying one unit and damaging two others.

It was not clear how the 5:30 p.m. blaze started at 3058 Riverside Dr., said Coral Springs Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Don Petito.

The complex has seven units.

A family in unit C-3 was preparing to leave when they noticed flames from the second floor. They tried to put the fire out, then called 911 when their attempts failed, Petito said.

One person was treated at the scene for cuts on the hands after breaking the glass to a fire extinguisher.

The unit where the fire started was destroyed and two adjacent apartments were damaged by smoke and water.

The city's fire marshal will investigate the cause.
