TORONTO -- A 15-year-old Toronto girl has come forward to say she was recently sexually assaulted by a refugee claimant and one-time Ottawa resident who is accused of kidnapping and repeatedly raping a 13-year-old girl late last week.

Toronto police said yesterday they added new charges of sexual assault and threatening death to the 16 charges already facing Fernando Zola, 31.

The news came as the Canadian Alliance blamed a lax immigration system for his presence in Canada despite being convicted of possession of stolen property since his arrival.

The 15-year-old girl said Mr. Zola approached her last week and offered her a ride and dinner, police said in a news release.

The victim accepted the ride and was driven around for a period of time in the suspect's car, the release states.

"She was then taken to an industrial area where she was threatened and sexually assaulted."

Det. Steve Ryan, the Toronto officer heading the investigation, said earlier that his squad was following up "a few" calls from the public.

Police released Mr. Zola's photo Sunday saying the severity of the crime led them to believe he might have struck before.

Mr. Zola appeared briefly yesterday morning in a Toronto courtroom where he was remanded in custody until next Monday.
