Fire in Shimek State Forest destroys 150 acres

(Croton-AP) -- A fire has destroyed more than 150 acres of trees
in the Croton unit of Shimek State Forest.
The state forest contains thousands of acres and Monday's fire
was estimated to take a milewide swath out of it.
The fire departments of Farmington, Bonaparte and Donnellson
battled the blaze for four-and-a-half hours.
The blaze was reported at 8:30 a-m by Duane Munford, whose
property was near the outer reaches of the fire.
Farmington Fire Chief Mike Thomas says there's evidence of
people being in the forest in the last 24 hours. He says fresh
horse tracks were seen on a trail.
Thomas says the fire was contained, although it's expected to
continue to smolder for a few days.
