On our large all paid city department we are facing a very serious problem. We allow people who have 3 years on the job to attend training classes designed to address specific skills. All this is done so that these individuals may "act" as an officer or engineer on an apparatus. These are also mandatory classes for those who wish to promote.
However, many of the people who go through these courses are now certified to "act" but there often seems to be a shortfall to do the jobs well and many firefighters feel that there safety is being put on the backburner, while the administration likes the fact that they have a piece of paper saying that this person is certified to do the job.
Do any of you have a similiar problem? how do you deal with it, and what solutions are there?
