    Question Inspections of Fire Houses

Do you do inspections of your own fire houses? If so, what is the reaction? If not why?

With the number of firehouse fires lately I would have thought this thread would have gotten some kind of response from someone ..... anyone???

Yes, we inspect our fire houses. We even make ourselves obtain permits. ITS HARD TO TELL SOMEONE ELSE THEY NEED A PERMIT, WHEN WE DON'T FOLLOW THE RULES!

Are there members in the department who think its a waste of time? Yes, but if the roof starts to fall in because some fire fighters removed a bearing wall that was in their way, or someone gets hurt because they failed to follow procedures, who do we have to blame, but ourselves. We should know better; we do know better; we just need to have the will to point out the problems; then someone else needs to have the will to make sure the problem gets corrected.

By the way, we even bill ourselves, to make sure it gets paid out of the appropriate account. AT LEAST MOST OF THE TIME!

Since I have recieved a reply... We also inspect our fire houses also. We follow the same rules we apply to everyone else. This did not make some of the FF's happy but once it was explained, the light bulb came on! We utilize the 1997 UFC with Oregon ammendments and updates but plan on switching to the IFC in 2004. We also utilize the 1997 UBC with Oregon ammendments and updates.

My take on ispections of fire houses is the same as yours Dhavenshome. I believe that for the community to follow, you have to lead!

We inspect our stations as well. This has been sadly neglected for a number of years prior to my arrival, but I am slowly making progress. Luckily, I have not found any major hazards yet. Most of the guys are pretty mindful of what is needed for safety. I also offer my recommendations for correction more as a safety suggestion to the Chief, than a finger pointing "who's responsible for this" hazard. However, I do document everything I do just to be on the safe side.
