Returned home last week after being at the East Gippsland fires Victoria Australia for 4 days. Slept in a church for 3 nights. Next to the confessional - lucky I am not an RC. Have the pictures to prove it. Main hassle I found at the fire was trying to read the infra red maps. They tell you where the hot spots are but areas where a cool burn has been done goes not show up along with spot fire areas which may still be active. The map does not give an adequate picture of control line positions. Ends up being a bit confusing trying to relate the real situation with that presented on a map. The map shows the fires some distance from Omeo township which came under threat and ember attack 2 days ago.
PS MAps are online at cfaonline.cfa.gov.au and are identical to those available on the fireground.![]()
