Hey guys! First day on here, and I have already received some very valuable information. I do have a couple questions that Im hoping someone can help me out with. First of all, I am currently in my first semester at Rio Hondo Community College (in California)where Im taking 3 fire tech courses and a math class, working towards my degree in Fire Science. Im 28 years old and former military (Army). So far I have established a membership with the CSFA, and joined a club here at school (Association of Future Firefighters). Im trying to do everything I can to get my foot in the door...however I have heard several times that going to Paramedic school will increase my chances on getting into the Fire Dept. My questions are, Where do they offer paramedic school? How long is the training, and how does that differ from being an emt? Im going into this field with no experience or training whatsoever, thats why any information I can get is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!!

Ohhhhh, you are screwed.
Just kidding. Check with your local hospital.
You can call a fire dept. they should be able to tell you
when you can do a EMT class. I am an EMT. There is a huge differance between an EMT-B and a EMT-P. You have to start at the B level.
As far as fire science that is an excellant start. I am sure you will get great information on this website. Look around and introduce yourself.
Hey guys, Fresh meat

No problem.
Just a little info for you.
If you go into firefighters forums you can get answers to just about any question you can think of. You may even get to ask something very controversial and that gets interesting.
Stay away from the volly vs. career thing. And drinking and responding to calls. These bring out the worst in everyone here.
So welcome and stay safe.

I currently am taking 13 units, during the summer Ill have another 12...and by the end of the year 13 or 14 more unts...Im expecting to have a little over 30 college units by the end of the year, Ive been told this is usually enough to get me in the academy, however Ive also been told its not a gurantee. My question is...how can I increase my chances in getting in, also, if I can try to get sponsored, how do I go about starting that process....thanks again!!!

Tell you what.
Go into some of the other forums.
Put it your subject line Question for CaptBob.
He has a book about how to get hired on a career dept.
He has alot of information. He has a website.
I believe it is www.eatstress.com.
He will know alot more than me.
Like I said before these forums are a great place to get answers.Proud to be IACOJ Illinois Chapter--Deemed "Crustworthy" Jan, 2003
