I work in a station that also houses chiefs and department administration, so I know that some of my co-workers have mastered the "looking busy" routine. Also, I'm currently a floater... So I get to see first-hand how different crews do different amounts of work. This has me wondering what exactly is a shift at YOUR station like?
How much recliner time are you getting in? How much time are you spending on drills, cleaning quarters & apparatus checks? What other duties does your shift have (SCBA maint., mapping, etc.)? Is your day structured for you or do you have a daily checklist of things to accomplish? What's the difference between life before 1700 and after?

Lookin Busy thats my speciality
I know exaclty how you feel. I work at the central fire station and the admin is right behind us. "The Chiefs window faces us" Anyways My shift is the always catching the brunt of things. But we always have to look busy. Our recliner time is from 11:30-1:00. Now the weekends and Holidays are pretty laid back. But any other time its hetic. We always get caught up in doing things for the city. You taken the servant part to the extreme. ex. Painting walls at city hall.

My day
At 0800 hrs we start our day. We check the trucks and clean the Station. After that the day is ours. The Chief tried a while ago to keep us "looking busy" but that changed after a short while. They have recently put out a traing schedule for ISO purposes. So once a month we do the required training. We will have to see if that continues.
GOD BLESS THOSE WHO WENT BEFORE US

work 24/72's...
Mon-Fri.
0700-0730 shift briefing
0730-0900 rig checks/wash etc.
0900-1000 daily chores in station
1000-1200 projects - we too share quarters with administration & frequently are engaged in running errands, shopping for dept. business or making repairs to stations & equipment, issue outdoor burning permits, & the list continues.....
training is done at each shifts leisure, as long as we accomplish the required topics for any given quarter. Some days we drill all day, while the next week maybe only an hour for the week.
1200-1300 lunch
1300-1700 finish projects, data entry of reports, etc.
after 1700 dinner & personal time
as for weekends we do rig checks, chores, catch up on training.
Other than that weekends are really laid back.
