***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for January 11th:

1956: Box#288, Ashland & Collington Aves (Northeast Of Downtown), sounded @ 1129hrs for a celler fire in a 2 story brick rowhouse on Ashland Ave, which was promptly extinguished - E-24 collided with a tractor trailer truck @ Patterson Park Ave & Monument St - The engine skidded along on the rain soaked street for almost 50' before turning over on its top, trapping the driver, Firefighter Charles M. Jerschied, 45, in his seat & killing him - Firefighter Joseph F. Taylor, 41, was on the back step of the engine & sailed through the air, overtop of a parked car & his head crashed into a corner mailbox, knocking it off its foundation, & killing him - Captain Felix Wojciehoski was seriously injured when wedged under the overturned engine - Firefighter William J. Bogdan received a broken leg & Firefighter Edmond M. Hall a lacerated right leg - Captain Wojciehoski was crippled & never returned to duty, & placed on the Pension Roll - Afterwards, the 1944 open cab Mack 80 pumper was restored to like new by the Repair Shop - The driver of the tractor trailer was charged with manslaughter in the deaths - Firefighter Taylor was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery on 1/14 & Firefighter Jerschied was buried in Baltimore Cemetery also on 1/14. 1960: 6 Alarms - Box#515 - 35-37 S Liberty St - Downtown West - Fire involved a mercantile building. (CHM1)

11JAN1998 - Guatemala City, Mexico - Earthquake - A 5.8 magnitude quake followed by a 4.4 aftershock rattled Guatemala City, Mexico causing landslides on the Pan American Highway. Eight people were injured as a result of the temblor.

11JAN1998 - Tingo Maria, Peru - Structural collapse - A bridge collapsed during its opening ceremony sending dignitaries and spectators plummeting to the rocks and water below. About 30 were injured in the incident.

11JAN1997 - Mexico City, Mexico - Earthquake - An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 shook Mexico City and the southern part of Mexico, but no deaths were reported.

11JAN1995 - California - Winter Storm - California is pelted by severe winter storms which cause major flooding.

11JAN1975 - Thailand - Flood - Widespread and extensive flooding in Thailand left 10,000 without homes or shelter and resulted in the loss of more than 130 lives.

11JAN1974 - West St. Paul, Minnesota - Chemical/HAZMAT - A BLEVE occurs.

11JAN1966 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Flood - A flood strikes and 550 people are killed an and thousands are injured. The severe flooding causes a landslide in the mountains behind Rio de Janeiro Despite the tragedy, the ramshackle huts were rebuilt in the same location.

11JAN1954 - Blons, Austria - Avalanche - At 0936 & 1700, 2 separate avalanches crush this Alpine village, killing 111 of its 376 inhabitants. In addition, 300 miners at the nearby LeDuc mine nearby were buried alive.

11JAN1954 - Dalaas, Austria - Avalanche - Two-ton locomotive swept into ravine by avalanche. 10 die.
