Man shot near mall
WEST VALLEY CITY ó An unidentified motorist was shot Sunday evening near Valley Fair Mall.
The man was shot in the back with a rifle, said West Valley Police Capt. Craig Black. He was listed in serious but stable condition this morning, he said.
Police are looking for a dark sport-utility vehicle, possibly a Chevy Blazer, in connection with the shooting.
About 7:50 p.m. Sunday the victim and two passengers left the mall, when they say a vehicle started following them, Black said. When they got near 2500 West and 3500 South someone in the pursuing vehicle fired at least four shots. Two went through the back windows, Black said.
The victims drove to the neighborhood of 1900 West and 3800 South, where the driver collapsed. He was airlifted to University Hospital.
The victims do not have any known gang affiliation. Black said investigators are trying to find out if there was an earlier confrontation between the two groups inside the mall, noting that a random shooting seemed unlikely. He also noted the friends of the victim were not being cooperative with police.
