LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Saturday, April 12, 2003, at 1044 hours (10:44 a.m.), eleven companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, two Battalion Command Teams and other support personnel, under the direction of Battalion Commander Gary Bowie, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 8242 North Haskell Avenue, in the Van Nuys area. First units on the scene reported a large 75’ x 150’, one-story commercial, “Great Western Litho”, with heavy smoke showing. Firefighters using handlines to aggressively attack the fire and aided by the building’s sprinkler system confined the fire to a large printing press and extinguished the fire in twenty-three minutes. A forty-nine year old male worker, who was cleaning the printing press with a flammable liquid when a flash fire occurred, suffered first and second degree burns to over 60% of his body and was transported to Northridge hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as “an electrical short/spark”. Fire damage is estimated at $1,001,000. ($1,000 structure and $1,000,000 contents)
