On April 10th, 2003, Gulfport/Gladstone Vol FD, IL Assistant Chief Vannie Duane KEEVER, 54 yoa, died in the Line-of-Duty.

Chief Keever was at the scene of a vacant mobile home fire when he collapsed from an apparent heart attack.

He was a 15 year veteran of the Department.

The Chief was the 30th Fire Fighter to Die in the Line-of-Duty this year per USFA.

1153 A34 Edmonton 4 pump fire, ALP required at 84 Thetford Close, 3-sty private dwelling 5m x 15m, heavy fire 3rd flr using 2 hosereels, ALP Aerial Ladder Platform.

4/14/03 Buffalo, N.Y.

20:56 Working fire at 274 Delaware (Hotel Terrain Apartments). Heavy smoke on the 6th floor. Fire was confined to apartment # 609. Engines 2, 1, 3, trucks 9, 2 and 11. At 21:00 a second alarm was requested. Engines 37, 32, 21, trucks 2, 4 and 5. Suspect (& occupant) in custody. He was rescued from the apartment, and put in police car for questioning. Kicked out car window and took off. Was caught again and put back into custody, now recovering from injuries at local hospital.

21:22 Working fire at 34 Woltz. Heavy fire on the first floor of a 1 1/2 story frame. Engines 22, 35, 33, trucks 15, 14 and 6.
