Many candidates want to open their oral board by saying they are married to show stability and life experience. Why?
The ultimate goal is to have the least amount of distractions in your oral board. There is no question that an oral board is subjective. Yea, there will be a few members on oral boards who might want to hear you are married.
Understand that firefighters have a higher divorce rate than the average bear. Life experience being married? Right. Marriage is the only war where you sleep with the enemy. The reasons why will have to wait until another posting. A San Francisco command class instructor recently said the divorce rate for SFFD is 75%. He said, “If you want to be a firefighter find someone you hate and buy them a house.”
“Love is grand. Divorce starts at a 100 grand.”
You never know who is going to be on your panel. It could be a member who’s dysfunctional other just left them. Someone divorced twice or more. I was stationed with another captain longer than he had been married to any one of his wife’s. He’s on wife number 5 now. There might be a panel member with an alternative life style. Yes, it could be all these and more.
My point here is since your oral boards score is broken down into hundreds of points, why take the chance on how being married will be received by the panel members when you don’t have to? So again, the ultimate goal is to have the least amount of distractions in your oral board. Of course the choice is yours.
