    Default HIPAA and EMS Communications

My Fire/Rescue agency sent a memo to my comm center concerning HIPAA compliance.

The part that interests me concerns what may be relayed to responding personnel in a radio dispatch. Apparently age and medical history may not be relayed to responding units via radio. Address and complaint seem to be all we are allowed to say.

As a responder, I feel this is important information that should be routinely conveyed to the crew.

    Thoughts and experiences with this?

I have noticed our comm center stop giving out age over the radio, and just replying as to a "adult male/female" and such, Im not sure if it is due to HIPAA, but I strongly believe it is. Now information is given via public service with the comm center, so the info is still relayed but a little safer than relaying it over and open ems channel.

We were told that as long as the information we are relaying is pertinant we can air it. We still are allowed to air patient age sex and medical history.
HIPPA governs agencies that bill medicare electronically.

I'd hope this is true. HIPAA governs Protected Health Information of a patient and how that information is handled.

    Here's an interesting article.

Dispatch can give out any info it wants as long as it pertains to the treatment of the patient. The only info it can't five out is private info regarding diagnosed diseases. e.g. AIDS, Hepatitis, etc...
