MANATEE - A man changing brake pads underneath his car was crushed to death in his driveway Sunday, authorities said, when the car's frame slipped from a jack holding the car aloft.

The man was pronounced dead at about 1:15 p.m. after Emergency Medical Service personnel arrived at his home in the 10000 block of Spoonbill Road East in Flamingo Cay. Manatee County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Kenyan would not release the man's name Sunday.

A neighbor who saw the man's body lying in front of his home after she pulled into her driveway cried out as she crossed the street.

Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies said the man might have been dead for several minutes before his family dialed 911.

Dep. Randy Lamb said one of the man's relatives came from inside the house to ask him if he wanted a drink when she noticed him pinned beneath his white Chrysler New Yorker.

By that time, he was no longer conscious, Lamb said.

EMS arrived shortly after deputies, according to Kenyan, but there was nothing they could do for the man.

"He was gone by then," Kenyan said. "It was just a bad, bad accident."

Kenyan said the man's death is being investigated as an accident.

"There are no other signs of anything that would lead us to do otherwise," Kenyan said.
