ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - A fire that authorities believe may
have been started by a homeless man damaged three stores on the
Boardwalk.
The fire Saturday caused smoke and water damage to Irene's gift
shop, a candy store and a T-shirt shop. No one was injured.
Police said the fire may have been started by a homeless person
seeking shelter underneath the Boardwalk.
Last June, a fire destroyed two Atlantic City Beach Patrol
storage sheds. And a May 28, 2002, fire damaged three stores near
St. James place.
Boardwalk fires commonly break out here when homeless people
living beneath the Boardwalk start fires to keep warm or cook food.
Last year's fire near St. James Place was traced to a mattress
underneath the Boardwalk.
