FORT PIERCE Arson is suspected in a fire early Monday that caused an estimated $100,000 in damages to a Marathon gas station, said Battalion Chief Carlos Duran, St. Lucie County Fire District spokesman.

The station had been out of service for two weeks, Duran said.

Fire units and police responded at 1:04 a.m. to the call at 3810 South U.S. 1, which is north of Sam's Club on the east side of U.S. 1 and south of Farmer's Market Road.

The one-story structure was completely engulfed in flames when fire units arrived, Duran said. The blaze reportedly was under control by 1:25 a.m. The inside of the structure was gutted, but no one was injured, officials said.
